Getting to Know Rick Oswald: President of CMSA Architects
If you’ve had the pleasure of working with CMSA Architects, chances are you’ve crossed paths with our President, Rick Oswald. With a rich background in architecture and a creative spirit that’s hard to miss, Rick brings both vision and heart to every project. I sat down with him recently to learn more about his design philosophy, his commitment to the community, and what keeps him inspired.
From Log Cabins to Lighthouses: Where Creativity Begins
Rick’s journey began in Colorado, building homes before eventually making his way to Florida. Over the years, he’s designed an array of striking structures—from cozy log cabins to luxurious estates and even a whimsical lighthouse replica. But what makes each project so unique?
“Inspiration comes from many places,” Rick shares. “It often starts with the client. I ask them to share images that speak to them personally, and that sparks the conversation. The project site also plays a big role—how the building fits into its environment, the views, sun angles, and overall context. It’s about harmony with the surroundings.”
Occasionally, Rick is given full creative freedom, and that’s when the magic really happens.
“Those are some of the most exhilarating projects,” he says. “One recent estate included 16 accessory structures, and I got to incorporate whimsy and artistic flair throughout. One of my favorite elements was a dining pavilion designed to resemble the rib cage of a whale, with Art Nouveau-inspired end caps based on a window I photographed in Paris years ago. Merging those ideas was a creative exercise I’ll never forget.”
Sustainability with Style
Sustainability has always been a core part of Rick’s design ethos—dating back to his early work in the green movement in Colorado. Although Florida’s approach is different, his commitment remains strong.
“Yes, I still factor environmental impact into every project. In Florida, LEED certification and the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) are leading the way. We encourage our clients to consider these programs—and whenever possible, we aim for a zero-carbon footprint.”
Designing with Purpose: Giving Back to the Community
Beyond his architectural work, Rick is passionate about serving the community. He’s been involved with several people-focused organizations, including the Safe Children Coalition, for which he recently designed a new youth shelter that just broke ground.
“Throughout my career, I’ve been mindful of how many individuals and nonprofits don’t have the resources to work with an architect. That’s why I’ve made it a personal mission to offer pro-bono or reduced-rate services to organizations that serve the greater good—especially those focused on children in need or at risk.”
This isn’t just a one-time effort. At CMSA, it’s a core value.
“It’s our intention to always have at least one of these community-focused projects on the boards. There’s always a need—and it’s one small way we can give back using the gifts we’ve been given.”
A Legacy Built on Passion
Having worked alongside Rick for the past five years, it’s been a privilege to witness his dedication, creativity, and generosity firsthand. Whether he’s mentoring staff, refining a design, or supporting the community, his passion is evident in everything he does.
Thank you, Rick, for sharing your time and wisdom—and for leading CMSA Architects with such heart.
